This monograph presents recent progress in the theory of Sobolev type equations and degenerate semigroups of operators. The book is organized in seven chapters. The first chapter contains some basic notions concerning Banach spaces, linear operators, theorems on infinitesimal generators, functional spaces and differential operators. The second chapter is devoted to relatively \(p\)-radial operators and degenerate strongly continuous semigroups of operators, presenting relative resolvents, relatively \(p\)-radial operators, degenerate strongly continuous semigroups of operators, approximations of Hille--Widder--Post type, splitting of spaces, infinitesimal generators and phase spaces, and degenerate strongly continuous groups of operators. The third chapter treats the problem of relatively \(p\)-sectorial operators and degenerate analytic semigroups of operators; the authors present degenerate analytic semigroups of operators, phase spaces for the case of degenerate analytic semigroups, space splitting, generators of analytic semigroups of operators, degenerate infinitely differentiable semigroups of operators, phase spaces for the case of degenerate infinitely continuously differentiable semigroups, kernels and images of degenerate infinitely differentiable semigroups of operators. Chapter 4 contains some results concerning relatively \(\sigma\)-bounded operators and degenerate analytic groups of operators, namely, relatively \(\sigma\)-bounded operators, relative \(\sigma\)-boundedness and relatively adjoint vectors, degenerate analytical groups of operators, sufficient conditions for the relative \(\sigma\)-boundedness, analytical semigroups of operators degenerating on the chains of relatively adjoint vectors of an arbitrary length. Chapter 5 is devoted to the Cauchy problem for inhomogeneous Sobolev-type equations, treating the cases of relatively \(\sigma\)-bounded operator, relatively \(p\)-sectorial operator and relatively \(p\)-radial operator. The authors also discuss the properties of strong solutions of Cauchy problems, the Cauchy problem for an equation with Banach-adjoint operators, and the inhomogeneous Cauchy problem for high-order Sobolev-type equations. Chapter 6 presents new aspects concerning bounded solutions of Sobolev-type equations and several examples. Chapter 7 is devoted to applications in optimal control theory. The authors study the problem of optimal control for an equation with relatively \(\sigma\)-bounded operator and the problem of optimal control for equations with a relatively \(p\)-sectorial operator.
