The authors address question of the existence and stability of spatially localized and temporarily quasiperiodic excitations in discrete nonlinear Schrödinger models. The existence of linearly stable, stationary and nonstationary localized vortex-like solutions is demonstrated. The simplest solution is a two-dimensional two-site breather, which is linearly stable. It is also shown that for some generalizations of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation where bistability occurs, a controlled switching between stable states is possible by exciting an internal breathing mode above a threshold value.
