    Let \(A\) be a von Neumann algebra. There has been an increasing interest in studying the product on \(A\) of the form \([a,b]_* = a\diamondsuit b = a\diamondsuit_{_{(-1)}} b = a b - b a^*\) (\(a,b\in A\)) (see, e.g., [\textit{P. Šemrl}, Colloq. Math. 59, No. 2, 241--251 (1990; Zbl 0723.46044), Stud. Math. 97, No. 3, 157--165 (1991; Zbl 0761.46047); Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 119, No. 4, 1105--1113 (1993; Zbl 0803.15024)], \textit{L. Molnár} [Linear Algebra Appl. 235, 229--234 (1996; Zbl 0852.46021)], \textit{M. Brešar} and \textit{M. Fošner} [Publ. Math. 57, No. 1--2, 121--134 (2000; Zbl 0969.16013)] and \textit{W.-Y. Yu} and \textit{J.-H. Zhang} [Linear Algebra Appl. 437, No. 8, 1979--1991 (2012; Zbl 1263.46058)]). Let \(M\) be a von Neumann algebra without central summands of type \(I_1\) and let \(\phi : M \to M\) be a surjective mapping. In the paper under review, the authors prove that \(\phi\) is strong skew commutativity preserving (i.e., \(\phi \left(a\diamondsuit_{_{(-1)}} b\right) = a\diamondsuit_{_{(-1)}} b\) for all \(a,b\in M\)) if and only if there exists a selfadjoint element \(z\) in the center of \(M\) with \(z^2 = 1\) such that \(\phi (a) = z a\) for every \(a\in M\). Related to this result, we note that it was proved in [\textit{R. L. An} and \textit{J.-C. Hou}, Acta Math. Sin., Engl. Ser. 26, No. 2, 287--294 (2010; Zbl 1214.47035)] that a bijective mapping \(\Phi\) on a \(\ast\)-standard subalgebra \({\mathcal A}\) of \(B(H)\) satisfies \(\Phi(a\diamondsuit_{_{(-1)}} b)=\Phi(a)\diamondsuit_{_{(-1)}} \Phi(b)\) for all \(a, b\in{\mathcal A}\) if and only if there is a unitary or conjugate unitary operator \(u\) on \(H\) such that \(\Phi(a)=u a u^{*}\) for all \(a\in{\mathcal A}\). This result was extended to factor von Neumann algebras by \textit{J.-L. Cui} and \textit{C.-K. Li} [Linear Algebra Appl. 431, No. 5--7, 833--842 (2009; Zbl 1183.47031)] and to more general von Neumann algebras by \textit{Z.-F. Bai} and \textit{S.-P. Du} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 386, No. 1, 103--109 (2012; Zbl 1232.47032)].
