A conjugate gradient method was proposed by \textit{E. J. Craig} [J. Math. Physics 34, 64-73 (1955; Zbl 0065.10901)] for problems of linear algebra. In the present paper, the method is applied to solve ill-posed problems in Hilbert spaces. The author establishes the convergence of the method in the case of exact data, and some other properties of the algorithm.
