This textbook can serve for the initial study of the finite element method (FEM) which is employed for the numerical solution of basic partial differential equations. The basic concept of FEM is presented and explained, the results of the accuracy of the method and a describtion of the FE implementation for one- and three-dimensional problems are given. Also the a posteriori error estimates are mentioned. Further, numerical solution of time-depenent problems is briefly given. Also the aspects of the numerical quadrature and the iterative solution of the arising algebraic systems are presented. In my opinion this textbook is well written, the explanation is accompanied by many illustrative figures and the assertions are presented without proofs. The reader need to have only the basis knowledge of the mathematical analysis, linear algebrac and the approximation theory in order to understand its contents.
