The authors call a Hamiltonian system algebraically completely integrable if the system and its commuting flows can be linearized on an abelian variety. Inspired by the work of S. Kowalewski on algebraically complete rigid body motion a necessary criterion for algebraic complete integrability is given. Then for a class of geodesic flows on SO(4) sufficiency of this criterion is shown. The results provide a procedure for computing the rational constants of motion and the periods on the torus. The methods used can also be applied in other finite dimensional systems [cf. the authors, Commun. Math. Phys. 83, 83-106 (1982; Zbl 0491.58017)] and for complex Korteweg-de Vries equation [\textit{B. Birnir}, ''Complex Hill's equations, complex Korteweg-de Vries flows and Jacobi varieties'', Ph. D. Dissertation, New York Univ. (1981)].
