The Serbian mathematician Jovan Karamata gained world-fame after his elegant proof of the Hardy-Littlewood Tauberian theorem. This paper presents the development of his ideas relating to this proof, particularly this work on the majorizability of sequences as a generalisation of various conditions of summability. In particular, Karamata's conditions of convergence, as presented in [\textit{J. Karamata}, Glas CXLIII (70), 3--24, 121--146 (1931; JFM 57.1378.01)], and the communications connected to their establishment are described.
