The author proposes a general method to determine what he calls weak Rankine-Hugoniot relations for one-dimensional systems of conservation laws with instantaneous relaxation toward a domain \(K\) that is convex with respect to the primitive variable. The systems have the form \[ \partial_t U+\partial_x f(U)= 0,\quad V= {\partial\varepsilon\over\partial U}\in K, \] where \(U\in\mathbb{R}^n\) is the unknown, \(U\mapsto f(U)\) is the flux, and \(U\mapsto\varepsilon(U)\) is strictly convex entropy. The adjoint variable \(V\in\mathbb{R}^n\) is constrained to a convex domain \(K\). Moreover, the author studies a model elastoplastic system of partial differential equations in the context of hyperelasticity. He constructs a new solution that consists of a smooth self-centered wave followed by a shock that is sonic ahead.
