The author studies the problem (*) \(-\varepsilon\cdot u''+p(x)u=f(x)\), \(u(0)=\alpha_ 0\), \(u(1)=\alpha_ 1\) where \(0<\varepsilon\ll 1\), \(\alpha_ 0\), \(\alpha_ 1\) are given constants, \(p,f\in C^ 2[0,1]\) and \(p(x)\geq\beta\) where \(x\in[0,1]\). The solution of (*) has two boundary layers at both end points of \([0,1]\). For the numerical solution of (*) the author presents a spline difference scheme which uses piecewise-constant and piecewise-cubic interpolatory polynomials as an approximation to the driving terms in the self-adjoint singular perturbation problem. The uniform convergence of the scheme is shown and a numerical example is presented.
