\textit{D. Z. Đocović} and \textit{F. Szechtman} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 133, No. 10, 2853--2863 (2005; Zbl 1084.15023)] characterized bilinear spaces with unimodular isometry group. \textit{E. S. Coakley, F. M. Dopico} and \textit{C. R. Johnson} [Linear Algebra Appl. 428, No. 4, 796--813 (2008; Zbl 1136.15008)] gave an alternative proof. In this paper the authors give another proof using canonical matrices for congruence, and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions involving canonical forms of \(M\) for congruence, of \((M^T,M)\) for equivalence, and of \(M^{-T}M\) for similarity, where \(M\) is the matrix of the bilinear form.
