This paper studies the algebra \(A_{1,p}(G)=L^ 1(G)\cap A_ p(G)\) under convolution product when G is a locally compact abelian group. The paper also characterizes the multipliers on \(A_{1,p}(G)\). Actually this problem is more interesting when G is nonabelian, and in this case \(A_{1,p}(G)\) is a Fourier algebra (in pointwise product) which was studied by the reviewer and \textit{I.-S. Chen} [J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser. A 30, 438-452 (1981; Zbl 0468.43002)]. A Fourier algebra is a commutative Banach algebra under pointwise product. This terminology comes from the Fourier transforms \(A(\hat G)\) of \(L^ 1(G)\) if G is abelian. If G is abelian, it is obvious that the space \(A_{1,p}(G)\) is a dense ideal of the algebra \(L^ 1(G)\) under convolution, and it has the translation invariant norm. So Theorem 1 of the paper becomes apparent. The multiplier problem in \(A_{1,p}(G)\) follows from the fact that \(A_{1,p}(G)\) is a Segal algebra of \(L^ 1(G)\) under convolution.
