The authors provide an axiomatic characterization of the Veronese variety \(V^{d^n}_n\) in projective space of dimension \(\binom{n+d}{d}-1\) over a field \(\mathbb K\) with sufficiently many elements but arbitrary otherwise. In doing so, they generalize theorems by \textit{F. Mazzocca} and \textit{N. Melone} [Discrete Math. 48, 243--252 (1984; Zbl 0537.51014)] and later authors. The three axioms define a ``Veronese cap'' and the main result states projective equivalence of its point set \(X\) with a Veronese variety. A Veronese cap is a spanning point \(X\) set together with a collection of ``rational subspaces'' that intersect \(X\) in rational normal curves. Any two points of \(x\), \(y \in X\) can be connected by such a curve, any two rational subspaces intersect in \(X\), and the tangents from a point \(x \in X\) to the rational normal curve in a given rational subspace are coplanar.
