The paper deals with functions \(f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}\) (\(\mathbb{R}\) -- the real line). A function \(f\) is said to be almost continuous in the sense of Stallings if for every open set \(U\subset\mathbb{R}^2\) containing the graph of \(f\) there is a continuous function \(h\) with \(h\subset U\). Let \(M\) be the set of all functions \(f\) such that \(\max\{f,g\}\) is almost continuous whenever \(g\) is so. The author gives a characterization of the set \(M\): The family \(M\) coincides with the family of all Darboux upper semicontinuous functions.
