The authors study the classical combined field integral equation formulations for time-harmonic acoustic scattering by a sound soft bounded obstacle, namely the indirect formulation due to \textit{H. Brakhage, P. Werner} [Arch. Math. 16, 325--329 (1965; Zbl 0132.33601)], \textit{R. Leis} [Math. Z. 90, 205--211 (1965; Zbl 0132.33602)] and \textit{O. I. Panic} [Usp. Mat. Nauk 20, No. 1(121), 221--226 (1965; Zbl 0143.34302)], and the direct formulation associated with the names of \textit{A. J. Burton} and \textit{G. F. Miller} [Proc. R. Soc. Lond. Ser. A 323, 201--210 (1971; Zbl 0235.65080)]. In addition, lower and upper bounds on the condition numbers are obtained for these formulations. Besides, the authors emphasize dependence on the frequency, the geometry of the scatterer, and the coupling parameter. Moreover, upper and lower bounds on the norms of two oscillatory integral operators are derived.
