    Consider the following boundary value problem for the singularly perturbed differential equation \[ \varepsilon{d\over dx} \Biggl[g(u){du\over dx}\Biggr]+ f(x, u)= 0,\quad x\in (0,1),\quad u(0)= u(1)= 0.\tag{P} \] The authors formulate conditions such that (P) has a spike solution \(u(x,\varepsilon)\) and construct an approximation \(u_0(x,\varepsilon)\) satisfying \[ \| u(x,\varepsilon)- u_0(x,\varepsilon)\|= O(e^{-\kappa_0/\varepsilon}). \]
