We use martingale methods and coupling arguments to prove results of \textit{P. Li} and \textit{L.-F. Tam} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 125, 171-207 (1987; Zbl 0622.58001)] and \textit{H. Donnelly} [Math. Z. 191, No. 4, 559-565 (1986; Zbl 0604.30051)] characterizing positive and bounded harmonic functions, respectively, on certain manifolds with ends.
