The theory of Hankel norm approximations was developed, in great generality, in a series of papers published by Adamjan, Arov and Krein between 1968 and 1978. The aim of the paper under review is to present a new approach to problems of Hankel norm and balanced approximation. This approach is based on a combination of polynomial algebra and the geometry of invariant subspaces, and leads to new insights into the basic properties of Hankel norm approximations and balanced realizations.
