The Cauchy problem for a nonlinear Sobolev-type equation with lower-order terms, modeling longitudinal waves in an infinite viscoelastic rod, is considered. It is shown that, if the functions of initial state and velocity belong to the subset of twice differentiable functions, then the Cauchy problem for the equation is uniformly well posed. Upper bounds for the supremum of the solution are also obtained. The existence of a global solution and the destruction of the solution to the equation of longitudinal waves in a viscoelastic rod are proved.
