This article deals with the numerical solution of elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) by overlapping Schwarz methods. The authors investigate the efficiency of the Schwarz-type domain decomposition preconditioners for the systems arising from the finite element discretization of the elliptic PDEs and finite element-time discretization of the parabolic PDEs. The results show a good scalability of one-level Schwarz preconditioners for parabolic PDEs with time steps of reasonable size. Also, it is proved that the two-level Schwarz method is necessary for the efficient solution of the discrete elliptic PDEs. Numerical simulations of a simple model problem and a large-scale problem arising in a nuclear waste repository are performed.
