The authors consider the nonlinear functional (\(q\)-difference) equation \[ \sum_{j=0}^k\sum_{t=1}^\infty C_{t,j}(z)(\varphi(q^jz))^t =G(z), \] where \(q\) is a given constant, \(G\) and \(C_{t,j}\) are given functions and \(\varphi\) is an unknown function. They give conditions (including the Brjuno one) guaranteeing the existence of an invertible analytic solution to this equation. Also it is shown that the equation may not have a nontrivial analytic solution when the Brjuno condition is violated. These results are then applied to dicuss the (non)existence of analytic solutions to the iterative equation \(\sum_{j=0}^k\sum_{t=1}^\infty a_{t,j}(f^j(z))^t=0\).
