The authors describe recent applications of localization methods to the study of commutators in the groups of points of algebraic and algebraic-like groups, such as \(\text{GL}(n,R)\), unitary groups \(\text{GU}(2n,R,\Lambda)\), and Chevalley groups \(G(\Phi,R)\). In particular, they announce results on the bounded width of relative commutators in the elementary generators. A list of unsolved problems is given.
