The author studies the representation theory of quantum universal enveloping algebras. Let \({\mathfrak g}\) be a complex simple Lie algebra, and \(U_ q({\mathfrak g})\) the associated quantum universal enveloping algebra. He defines the singular vector in the Verma module over \(U_ q({\mathfrak g})\), and gives explicit formulae for these singular vectors when the deformation parameter \(q\) is not a nontrivial root of unity. The vectors correspond exhaustively to a class of positive roots of \({\mathfrak g}\) which are called straight roots. Also, when \(q\) is a root of unity, the singular vectors of Verma modules for \({\mathfrak g}\) being an arbitrary complex simple Lie algebra are treated. It should be noted that the author uses a special basis of \(U_ q({\mathfrak g}^ -)\), and this basis turns out to be part of a general basis introduced by Lusztig for \(U_ q({\mathfrak b}^ -)\), where \({\mathfrak g}^ -\) is the negative root subalgebra and \({\mathfrak b}^ -\) is a Borel subalgebra in \({\mathfrak g}\).
