The authors propose their program of classifying the discrete Painlevé equations which are defined as integrable second-order mappings which, in continuous limits, lead to one of the classical Painlevé equations. This is a nice survey of the ideas on which this program is based. The article contains a list of all currently available discrete Painlevé equations.
