In this paper and after recalling briefly a fundamental exterior differential system of Riemannian geometry, considered in his previous work [``A fundamental differential system of Riemannian geometry'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1112.3213v4}], the author applies it to the specific case of dimension three. In particular, it is considered verification and enlightening of the general formulas, achieved in the already mentioned article (specifically those concerned the first order structure of 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds). The author finds in Theorem 2.1, the structure of an oriented Riemannian manifold \(M\) of dimension 3, together with a 5-dimensional Riemannian manifold \(\mathcal S\) given by the total space of the tangent sphere bundle. Also, the case that \(M\) has constant sectional curvature is characterized (Corollary 2.1). Another important result of this paper is the classification of the corresponding 3-tensor \(\nabla\)Ric. In Theorem 2.3, some certain circumstances in terms of the associated exterior differential systems are provided, satisfying each of them entails the Riemannian 3-dimensional manifold, in question, to belong to some of the extant four Ricci types \(I-IV\).
