This paper is the first step in the development of a general theory for Jordan algebras of outer fractions. Following \textit{C. Martinez}'s work [J. Algebra 237, No. 2, 798--812 (2001; Zbl 1006.17024); see also \textit{N. Jacobson, K. McCrimmon} and \textit{M. Parvathi}, Commun. Algebra 6, 911--958 (1978; Zbl 0394.17009)], the authors begin by discussing various denominators for fractions in order to properly extend to quadratic algebras the notion of algebras of outer fractions with respect to an Ore monad. In the paper, necessary and sufficient Ore-type conditions for a Jordan algebra to have an algebra of fractions are given. The paper also included the so called Fraction Materialization Theorem (FMT), which turn to be the natural extension of Proposition 3.1 of Martinez's work. Following the authors, the FMT asserts that ``whenever we can find a home where fractions live, the set of all fractions forms a subalgebra which is an algebra of fractions''. Some results on embeddings in order to find a home for quadratic algebras are announced in subsequent papers.
