In [J.\ Math.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 350, No.\,2,\ 525--530 (2009; Zbl 1182.46003)], the first author proved that every Banach space \(X\) for which there exists a continuous, linear, one-to-one map of the space into \(c_0(\Gamma)\) for some set \(\Gamma\) admits an equivalent norm \(|\cdot|\) such that \((X,|\cdot|)\) has the weak fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings. In the article under review, the authors generalize this using García-Falset's coefficient \(R(X)= \sup\{\liminf \| x_n+x\|\}\) where the supremum is taken over all points \(x\) in the unit ball of \(X\) and all weakly null sequences \((x_n)\) in the unit ball of \(X\). This coefficient was introduced in [\textit{J.\,García-Falset}, J.\ Math.\ Anal.\ Appl. 215, No.\,2, 532--542 (1997; Zbl 0902.47048)] where it was shown that Banach spaces with \(R(X)<2\) have the weak fixed point property. The authors prove that, if there exists a continuous, linear, one-to-one map of a Banach space \(X\) into a Banach space \(Y\) with \(R(Y)<2\), then \(X\) admits an equivalent norm with the weak fixed point property. Since \(R(c_0(\Gamma)) =1\), this generalizes the result in the previous article. The authors use their result to show that, if \(\omega\) is the first infinite ordinal and \(K\) is a compact topological space whose \(\omega\)-th derived set \(K^{(\omega)}= \emptyset\), then any Banach space that is mapped into \(C(K)\) by a continuous, linear, one-to-one map can be renormed to have the weak fixed point property. In particular, if \(K\) is a Ciesielski-Pol compact set, then \(C(K)\) can be renormed to have the weak fixed point property.
