An operator T on a Banach space E is said to be ergodic, provided the averages 1/n\(\sum^{bn-1}_{k=0}T^ kx\) converge in norm for each \(x\in E.\) Assume that E is a Banach lattice satisfying either of the following two conditions: (i) E is Dedekind \(\sigma\)-complete, or (ii) E has a topological orthogonal system. Under these conditions the author proves that there exists a central operator T (i.e., \(0\leq T\leq Id_ E)\) which is not ergodic. Therefore, E is not reflexive. This is a partial answer to a question raised by L. Sucheston. As the author notices, in the case (i) this question was answered also by \textit{R. Zaharopol} [Math. Z. 192, 81-88 (1986; Zbl 0575.47027)].
