Smooth representations of a locally compact topological group \(G\) on a bornological vector space are constructed. It is emphasized that the representations of totally disconnected groups on vector spaces and of Lie groups on Fréchet spaces are special cases of those described in the paper. The smoothening functors on representations and modules are examined. It is shown that the category of smooth representations of \(G\) is isomorphic to the category of essential modules over the convolution algebra \(D(G)\) of smooth functions with compact support on \(G\). The basic properties of induction and compact induction functors are established using adjoint functor techniques. It is proven that the center of the category of smooth representations of \(G\) is isomorphic to the center of the multiplier algebra \(D(G)\). In the totally disconnected case this center is the same as the Bernstein center and plays a fundamental role in the representation theory of reductive groups.
