Making use of certain compositions of nonsingular linear fractional transformations, a two-dimensional continued fraction (TDCF) is here defined. By truncating all the continued fractions involved in such a way that the branch number \(k\) in the \(n\)th approximant uses \((n-k)\) terms in each continued fraction [see \textit{L. Lorentzen} and \textit{H. Waadeland}, Continued fractions with applications (1992; Zbl 0782.40001)], approximants of TDCF can be thus constructed. Through certain nominated ``fork'' property which is satisfied by these approximants (property that, in particular, is also valid for the TDCF with positive real elements), some elementary properties of TDCFs are established.
