In general, the article concerns the decomposition as a direct integral of a given unitary irreducible representation of a group \(G\) restricted to a subgroup \(H\cap G\) by using appropriate geometric representations with the help of an invariant differential operator. In more detail, let \(G\) be a connected semisimple matrix Lie group, \(H\subset G\) a connected reducible subgroup, \(K\subset G\) a maximal compact subgroup such that \(H\cap K\subset H\) is a maximal compact subgroup of \(H\). Let \((\tau,H)\) be a finite-dimensional representation of \(H\), \(E= G\times W\to G/H\) be a \(G\)-homogeneous, Hermitian vector bundle attached to \(\tau\), \(L^2(G,\tau)\) resp. \(C^\infty(G;\tau)\) be the space of \(L^2\)- (resp. smooth) sections \(f: G\to W\) (where \(f(gk)= \tau(k^{-1})f(g)\), \(g\in G\), \(k\in K\)). Let moreover \(D\) be a \(G\)-homogeneous elliptic differential operator on \(C^\infty(G,\tau)\). Main result: If \((\tau_*,W)\) is the restriction of \(\tau\) to the subgroup \(H\cap K\subset H\) and \(r: C^\infty(G,\tau)\to C^\infty(H,\tau_*)\) the natural restriction map, then \(r(L^2(\ker D))\subset L^2(H, \tau_*)\) is a continuous map and the generalized Berezin operator \(\tau\tau_*\) is a continuous operator on \(L^2(H,\tau_*)\). Under suitable conditions \(\tau\tau_*\) is continuous on \(L^p(H,\tau_*)\), \(1\leq p\leq\infty\).
