The aim of this paper is to show that the general convergence principle presented by \textit{R. E. Bruck} and the author [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 4, 939-950 (1980; Zbl 0454.65043)] can be applied to the study of the asymptotic behavior of solutions to nonlinear Volterra equations. As the main result is formulated a convergence theorem. It is based on an analysis of the behavior of certain functionals defined on the trajectory of the solution. Two applications of this result are presented. The theorems can be applied to two problems of nonlinear heat flow in materials with memory. Finally, two open problems are mentioned.
