The paper is concerned with the notion of ''infinitesimal motions as rigid as possible'' in a Riemannian manifold. The discussion of a previously given definition [\textit{M. Bartolozzi} and the author; ibid. 29, 152-160 (1980; Zbl 0463.70008)] yields unsuitable existence conditions. Then a new approach is introduced and suitable existence and uniqueness results are achieved.
