    The authors prove the following theorems: let \(0\neq p_ n\), \(p_ m,q_ n,q_ m\in\mathbb{R}\), \(p_ n\neq p_ m\), \(q_ n\neq q_ m\) for \(n\neq m\), \(p_ n\neq q_ m\) for \(n,m\in\mathbb{N}\); then there exist \(A,B\subset\mathbb{R}\) such that \(A+p_ nB=\mathbb{R}\) and \(A+q_ nB\) contains no interval for \(n\in\mathbb{N}\). There are also compact subsets \(A,B\subset\mathbb{R}\) such that \(A+(-1)B\) contains an interval but \(A+B\) does not. As applications they deduce answers to the questions mentioned in the title.
