The author considers the variety F of k-dimensional linear subspaces lying on a generic projective complete intersection S. Under general assumptions involving k, the multidegree and the dimension of S, he proves that F is connected, smooth and its local deformations come from deformations of S. Such results extend those of \textit{J. Wehler} [Math. Ann. 268, 519-532 (1984; Zbl 0527.32014)] regarding small deformations of Fano surfaces, as well as the results of \textit{W. Barth} and \textit{A. Van de Ven} [Arch. Math. 31, 96-104 (1978; Zbl 0383.14003)] regarding the connectedness of the variety of lines on hypersurfaces.
