Suppose \(G\) and \(G'\) are a symplectic and an orthogonal group (respectively) over a nonarchimedean local field \(k\) of characteristic zero. Then they form a dual reductive pair inside a larger symplectic group \(\text{Sp}\). Let \(\widetilde{G}\), \(\widetilde{G}'\), and \(\widetilde{\text{Sp}}\) denote the double covers of all of these groups. Given genuine, irreducible, admissible representations \(\pi\) and \(\pi'\) of \(\widetilde{G}\) and \(\widetilde{G}'\), the authors show \[ \dim\Hom_{\widetilde{G}\times \widetilde{G}'}(\omega,\pi\otimes\pi') \leq 1, \] where \(\omega\) is an oscillator representation of \(\widetilde{\text{Sp}}\). That is, they show ``multiplicity preservation'' for the local theta correspondence. In the case where the residual characteristic of \(k\) is odd, this theorem was first proved by Waldspurger. The present proof is much shorter. The authors remark that the same argument works for dual pairs of unitary groups, but not for quaternionic type I dual pairs.
