The author consider time discretization of the parabolic problem \[ u_t=Au,\;t>0,\;u(0)=v\tag{1} \] with data \(v\) in a Banach space \(X.\) Let \(A\) is closed linear operator with domain \(D(A)\subset X\) and there are constants \(M\geq 1\) and \(\alpha \in (0,\pi /2)\) such that the resolvent set \(\rho (A)\) satisfies \[ \rho (A)\supset \overline{\Sigma} {\alpha}\tag{2} \] where \(\Sigma \alpha=\{z: z\in C: |z|>0, |arg z|<\pi-\alpha\},\) and such that for the resolvent \((zI-A)^{-1}\) has the place the inequality \(\|(zI-A)^{-1} \|\leq \frac{M}{|z|}\) for all \[ z\in \Sigma {\alpha},\tag{3} \] The main result of this paper is Theorem 2.1: Assume that \(A\) satisfies (2) and (3). Let \(r_a\) and \(r_s\) are A-stable rational functions that satisfy conditions \(r_a(z)=e^z+O(z^{p+1})\) as \(z\to 0,\) \(r_s(z)=e^z+O(z^p)\) as \(z\to 0,\) \(r_s(\infty)=0,\) and let \[ r_n(z)=\begin{cases} r_s(z)^n, &n=1,2,\dots m-1,\\ r_s(z)^mr_a(z)^{n-m} &n\geq m.\end{cases} \] Assume further that the number of smoothing step \(m\geq 0\) is fixed, and that \(p\geq 2.\) Then, if \((p-m)/2\leq j\leq p,\) \(\|(r_n(kA)-e^{t_nA})v\|\leq \frac{CM}{t_n^{p-j}}\|A^jv\|\), \(n\geq \max \{-j,1\}.\) Here \(t_n=nk,\) \(k>0\) is the time step, \(C\) is some constant. The final part concerns the application of main results to error estimates in supremum norm for fully discrete methods for (1) in the case: \[ Au=(a(x)u'(x))'-b(x)u'(x)-c(x)u(x),\quad x\in (0,1),\quad u(0)=u(1)=0, \] where the coefficients are smooth, real-valued functions with \(a(x)\) positive on \((0,1)\).
