Part I of this paper appeared in [Proc. Conf., Udine/Italy 1984, CISM Courses Lect. 287, 265-278 (1984; Zbl 0566.20039)]. Sect. 4 is a classification of mixed groups which have a maximal rank tfree subgroup A such that \(\tau\) (A) is finite and \(\tau\) (A/pA)\(\leq 1\) for all primes p. Sect. 5 is a study of a class of mixed groups which can be classified by linear transformations of rational vector spaces, and which exhibit some pathological decompositions. Let G be a mixed group \(W=G/t(G)\), \(\rho\) : \(G\to W\) the natural hom. Let A be a full tfree subgroup of G, so \(U=G/A\) is torsion, \(\pi\) : \(G\to U\) the natural hom. Since \(t(G)\cap A=0\), there are monoms k: t(G)\(\to U\), \(\sigma\) : \(A\to W\) with U/k(t(G))\(\cong W/\sigma (A)\cong G/<t(G);A>\), and the diagram (1) is exact and commutative. In this diagram \(T\cong U/k(t(G))\) is torsion, \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) are chosen to make the diagram commutative. G is a pullback of W and U with kernels A and t(G). \offlineqn{039 } \textit{C. E. Murley} [Pac. J. Math. 40, 647-665 (1972; Zbl 0261.20045)] introduced the class E of tfree groups A of finite rank such that for all primes \(p: \tau_ p(A)=\tau (A/pA)\leq 1\). A mixed group G is called a mixed Murley group if it contains a full subgroup from E and call such a subgroup a Murley subgroup of G. If G is an extension of a torsion group by a finite rank tfree group W, then G is mixed Murley iff W is Murley and has a full subgroup A such that (i) \(T=W/A\) is locally cyclic and (ii) \(pW=W\) for all primes p for which \(T_ p\cong Z(p^{\infty})\). In Sect. 5 a mixed group G is characterized with a reduced torsion subgroup being a pullback of its tfree factor W and a subgroup of the cotorsion hull c(t(G)) of t(G).
