    In this paper the system \[ u_ t=[(1+\alpha v)u]u_{xx}+\beta (1- \lambda u-\mu v)u,\quad v_ t=du_{xx}+\gamma (1-u-v)u, \] t\(>0\), \(x\in (0,1)=I\), with boundary conditions \(u_ x=v_ x=0\), \(t>0\), \(x\in \partial I\), is studied. This problem is related to segregation patterns between two competing species. It is shown the existence of non-constant steady state solutions with \(\beta\) \(\to 0\) for some \(0<\lambda\), \(\mu <1\) or \(0<\lambda <1<\mu\). If \(\beta\) \(\neq 0\) but sufficiently small and for sufficiently small d a non-constant, nonnegative steady solution, exhibiting spatial segregation, is constructed.
