Let M be an n-dimensional connected Riemannian manifold with harmonic curvature, i.e., the covariant derivative of its Ricci tensor is a symmetric tensor field of type (0,3); and let \(f: M\to N\) be an isometric immersion into an \((n+1)\)-dimensional space of constant curvature. The author proves that f has to be an isoparametric hypersurface with at most 2 principal curvatures (which are widely known), if its mean curvature is constant. This last condition is satisfied, if the multiplicity of each principal curvature is everywhere at least 2 and the second fundamental form of f is non-degenerate at some point \(p\in M\). These results are based on a thorough examination of Codazzi tensors. They generalize E. Omachi's results in the article quoted above. Omachi's investigation is restricted to the case where N is the Euclidean space resp. the Euclidean sphere of dimension \(n+1\); furthermore his hypotheses are a little stronger.
