The article is a review paper on adaptive grid generation which is a widely studied problem (there are specialized conferences and even monographies devoted to this problem). While the majority of adaptive procedures is aimed at problems with rapid solution variations, the main concern of the author is the construction of methods that are not restricted by the choice of problem solution algorithm. The basic equidistribution process is viewed from different points. The author derives various grid generation algorithms from methods of numerical mathematics (quadrature formulas, differential equations, etc.) Curve-by- curve methods allow one to modify the algorithms to work in higher dimensions. Finite volume and variational methods combined with various movement strategies in a multidimensional context are discussed. The author assumes that the reader is familiar with the problem of the adaptive grid generation.
