In this paper the author continues his study of various notions of relative retracts that he has dealt with in 6 previous papers (his references [10]--[15], which we shall not list here). In [Topology Appl. 156, No. 4, 697--709 (2009; Zbl 1166.54008)], he and \textit{R. Skiba} gave the first non-trivial example of a relative retract. One of the purposes of the current paper is to introduce a ``general and simpler method of the construction of relative retracts.'' In this paper, there are provided a variety of definitions and notations from which the reader can sort out the multiple types of relative retracts under consideration. These include approximative relative retracts. Examples that distinguish the more general types of relative retracts and approximative relative retracts from their ancestors are given in Sections 6 and 8. Other sections discuss and describe properties of these more general classes of spaces.
