The authors develop the basic elements to define cotriple homology and cohomology theories in the whole category of precrossed modules. First it is proved that the category of precrossed modules is an algebraic category, i.e., there exists a tripleable forgetful functor from this category to the category of sets. Then the authors show that this cotriple (co)homology theory generalizes the Eilenberg-MacLane theory of (co)homology groups. Finally, relationships with other (co)homology theories are considered.
