This article is on the work and life of the great Chinese mathematician Hua Loo-Keng (1910-1985) -- it focuses on Hua's teaching of mathematics to the masses rather than on his theoretical work. Three points have been illuminated -- one, his life and work illustrate the interaction between science and political development. Two, Hua's work on the application of mathematics in the real world displays much creativity and intellectual powers -- refuting the persistent prejudice among mathematicians that only pure mathematics requires the highest level of intellectual creativity. Three, the type of applications that Hua dealt with during the mass campaigns and the merits of his approach. The article is extremely informative and refreshing and definitely worth reading by any professional mathematician (especially those who complain about lack of facilities and encouragement).
