For a prime number \(p\), let \(\Lambda= \mathbb{Z}_p [[T]]\) be the ring of power series with \(p\)-adic coefficients. Let \(M\) be a finitely generated \(\Lambda\)-module on which a finite group \(G\) acts. If \(H\) is a subgroup of \(G\), there is the idempotent \(e_H=(1/ |H|) \sum_{h \in H}h\) of the group ring \(\mathbb{Q}[G]\). Let \(\lambda_H\) be the Iwasawa \(\lambda\)-invariant of the module \(M^H\), the elements of \(M\) fixed by \(H\). The author shows that a relation of the form \(\sum_i r_ie_{H_i} =0\) with \(r_i\in\mathbb{Q}\) implies a corresponding relation \(\sum_ir_i \lambda_{H_i} =0\). There is also a non-Galois version in which there is a collection of fields and to each field there is associated a finitely generated \(\Lambda\)-module. There are assumed to be certain maps between these modules and these maps are used to construct idempotents in endomorphism rings. A linear relation among these idempotents again implies a corresponding relation among the \(\lambda\)-invariants. The author obtains results of \textit{E. Kani} [Can. Math. Bull. 28, 321-327 (1985; Zbl 0557.14017)] on relations among the genera of algebraic curves, and results of \textit{M. Madan} and \textit{H. Zimmer} [J. Number Theory 25, 213-219 (1987; Zbl 0608.12005)] on relations among Iwasawa invariants for class groups of number fields. The methods are also applied to the generalized Selmer groups of \(p\)-adic representations of Galois groups.
