A one-dimensional nonlinear viscoelastic \(3\times 3\)-system with relaxation is considered being an approximation to a hyperbolic \(2\times 2\)-system. An approximate solution \(V(x,t)\) is constructed on the basis of the Riemann problem for data which can be connected by a 1-shock and a 2-shock succesively. The function \(V(x,t)\) is shown to be a global attractor for any solution \(v(x,t)\) provided the difference \(V(x,0)-v(x,0)\) is small.
