It is known that cascadic (oneway) multigrid methods may fail to be optimally efficient or may not even converge unless special restrictions are imposed. It is shown here that these special restrictions need not always be imposed on the finest grid. For a second-order elliptic equation, for example, nonconforming piecewise linear finite elements may be used on the finest grid if conforming elements are used on the coarser grids. Efficient finite elements for elastic plate problems are also presented.
