The authors consider the linear time-invariant (LTI) system \[ \dot x(t)=Ax(t)+ Bu(t),\quad y(t)= Cx(t) \] where \(x\in\mathbb{R}^n\), \(u\in \mathbb{R}^m\), \(y\in\mathbb{R}^p\) are the state, the control input and the measurement output, respectively, and \(A,B,C\) are constant matrices of suitable dimension such that the triple \((A,B,C)\) is controllable and observable. The authors discuss the case when the system is not stabilizable via a single static output feedback. So the problem is whether there exists a finite-state hybrid static output feedback to asymptotically stabilize the system. It is shown that the answer is affirmative for a class of second-order \((n=2\), \(m=p=1)\) LTI systems by constructing a 2-state static output feedback incorporated with a conic switching law.
