With a view to constructing a simple test for the identifiability of linear and non-linear compartmental systems, some basic concepts in the area are revisited in a panoramic view of the problem. In particular, the Jacobian matrix of the identification equations is investigated, focussing the attention on the set of zero measures in which its rank is less than the number of unknown parameters. In this context, the author proposes a number of properties and theorems (with proofs) which are already known and can be found in both the theoretical and specific literature on the subject [see for example \textit{J. Delforge}, Int. J. Syst. Sci. 16, 1015-1026 (1985; Zbl 0571.93019)].
