The authors study periodic perturbations of differential equations possessing a degenerate homoclinic orbit. Regarding the degeneracy it is assumed more precisely that along the homoclinic orbit the tangent spaces of the corresponding stable and unstable manifolds intersect in a two-dimensional space. Using a functional analytical approach bifurcation equations for nearby homoclinic solutions are derived. The method of codiagonalization plays a key role in the discussion of the bifurcation equations. As a result, the homoclinic solutions of the perturbed equation can be detected. Supplementary I want to point out the following: Unfoldings of the problem under consideration have been studied in [\textit{U. Schalk} and \textit{J. Knobloch}, Nonlinearity 8, No. 6, 1133--1141 (1995; Zbl 0841.58050)], by using the same functional analytical approach. Finally, in the \textit{corrigendum} [J. Differ. Equations 259, No. 11, 6885--6886 (2015; Zbl 1332.34082)], the authors address an error in counting the codimension of bifurcations in the paper at hand.
