The authors consider numerical solutions of two-dimensional Maxwell equations also the boundary conditions are approximated by perfectly matched layers (PML). They produce an estimate for the errors and point out that there is a difference when evanescent modes are considered. The details of the approximation when the PML system is discretized are discussed and error estimates are given. It is pointed out that the errors involved are dependent on the mesh size and strength of dampening in the matching layer. Some numerical examples are given involving scattering by various objects and a treatment of the idea of an embedded boundary.
